Aspen Announces Michael Turner Weapon X #1 Variant

For the second time, Aspen and Marvel are teaming up for a Michael Turner exclusive variant cover, this time for Weapon X #1.

There can be no question that even nine years after his death, fans are still in awe of Michael Turner. When you see Turner’s work, there is never a doubt about who drew it or that they had a gift few others possess.

Considering that Turner passed away in 2008, it is even remarkable that we are still getting treated to new pieces of his art. Not known as the most prolific or fastest artist, regardless Aspen Comics, the company he founded, still seems able to publish a steady stream of new artwork.

That new artwork has oftentimes been in the form of new variant covers for various Aspen titles, such as Fathom and Soulfire. However last year Aspen collaborated with Marvel Comics to publish an exclusive variant cover for Amazing Spider-Man #15 featuring a previously unseen piece by Turner. And now the two companies are working together once again.

Aspen and Marvel have announced that they will be publishing an exclusive variant cover for Weapon X #1 this April. Featuring Old Man Logan, the artwork has been adapted from a proposed Wolverine miniseries Turner had been working on with Jeph Loeb before his untimely death.

The art has been amazingly colored by Peter Steigerwald and will only be available on Aspen’s online store in three different versions.

Weapon X Cover A will be limited to 3,000 copies and will be available to purchase by itself. Weapon X Cover B will be limited to just 2,000 copies and will only be available if you buy both Cover A and B. Not to be outdone, Weapon X Cover C will be limited to only 1,000 copies and can only be purchased if you buy all three versions.

Now I’ll be honest with you: these books aren’t exactly cheap. But when you look at the covers you have to admit that they are vastly better then most of the artwork Marvel passes off as a variant cover nowadays.

Pre-orders for the books are now open and with quantities this limited they will sell out sooner rather than later. So if you want one, you may want to get on that.
