Chris Evans Both Will And Won’t Play Captain America Again

Chris Evans has been asked recently if he plans to come back for a Captain America 4 and his answers have been all over the place.

To hear Chris Evans talk about it, one minute he’d be happy to return for another go around as Captain America and the next, not so much.

This is what happens when your contract is up to play one of the most popular characters in the money-making machine that is the superhero movie genre.

This is what we know. Like many of the key actors who have roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Evans’ contract is done and over once he is finished filming Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: We Don’t Know What They’re Going To Call This One Yet. That means that either Marvel will have to recast the role, kill off Steve Rogers or convince Evans that he wants to make more Captain America movies.

Killing him off is not really an option and recasting Steve Rogers or Tony Stark is a bridge that Marvel Studios will not want to have to cross until they absolutely have to.

Which means if they want a fourth Captain America movie, they need to get Evans to sign another contract.

And depending on what day it is, either Evans sounds like he’d love to or it is the last thing in the world he wants to do.

As early as last week, Evans was talking to Esquire and sounded for all intents and purposes like he was done with the role. From the tone of the interview, he seemed like he could not wait to be done with the training and the costume and everything else that goes with playing the part.

As is par for the course, the internet went nuts with every site writing how Evans has all but confirmed that after the two Avengers sequels he is done with the MCU.

The only problem is that now Evans sounds like he has changed his tune.

While speaking with Collider, Evans pretty much says that if Marvel can make him a convincing offer (in other words, pay him a boatload of money) he would love to don the shield once more.

"“It’s really not up to me. My contract is up. I’m not going to sit here and say, “No more.” I think Hugh Jackman has made 47 Wolverine movies, and they somehow keep getting better. It’s a character I love, and it’s a factory that really knows what they’re doing. The system is sound, over there. They make great movies. If they weren’t kicking out quality, I’d have a different opinion. But, everything Marvel does seems to be cinema gold. And like I said, I love the character. The only reason it would end is ‘cause my contract is up. After Avengers 4, my contract is done. Talk to Marvel. If we engage further, I’d be open to it. I love the character. It’s almost like high school. You certainly always look to senior year, and then, all of a sudden, senior year happens and you’re like, “I don’t know if I’m ready to go.” It’s tough thinking about not playing the guy.”"

So one week Evans doesn’t want anything to do with the part, the next he would be agreeable to coming back.

Lucky for Marvel, Avengers 4 doesn’t hit theaters until May of 2019, so they have time to work something out with Evans one way or another. Of course, it might be easier if Evans himself knew what he wanted to do, but that’s what negotiating is all about.

The currently filming Avengers: Infinity War opens everywhere on May 4, 2018.
