Deadpool 2: Pierce Brosnan Cable Rumors Are “Not True”

Pierce Brosnan dismisses claims that he was in the running to play Cable in Deadpool 2.

There’s no other way to say it: 2016 was a momentous year for Deadpool. The “Merc with a Mouth” saw the release of his first movie, which rid the painful memory of his previous iteration in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

To the surprise of many (but not to fans), Deadpool saw significant success. For a time, it was granted the title of “most successful R-Rated movie ever.” So, in Hollywood fashion, a sequel was as definite as a Stan Lee cameo in a Marvel movie.

In fact, Deadpool himself teased the sequel in the after-credits. He also went as far as revealing the appearance of a fan-favorite Marvel character—Cable.

Fans immediately jumped at the mention, prompting various dream casting suggestions. Since then, we’ve had names such as Russell Crowe, Brad Pitt, and Michael Shannon (the latter reportedly named as the front-runner) mentioned with the role.

One name thrown in the mix was former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan. This all came about from a viral photo featuring Hugh Jackman, Pierce Brosnan, and Ryan Reynolds.

Fans jumped at the possibility of Brosnan as Cable. Unfortunately, this was nothing, but a fun picture between three friends.

Brosnan later appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where the actor was asked whether there was any truth to these rumors. The actor explicitly debunked any speculation stating:

"“Not true. Nothing’s come my way yet. It’s completely made up. We were sitting waiting for a plane, the three of us, and the guy said, ‘Quick. Let’s get a photograph. Jump in the middle.’ Mr. Reynolds said, ‘Let’s do three wise monkeys,’ put it out there, and it went viral.”"

Whille the actor may be fibbing in a “Benedict Cumberbatch is not Khan” way, he probably is telling the truth. Well, I guess that’s one name we can cross off the list.

No one has been cast as the time-traveling mutant as of this report. Although we all feel the announcement is on the horizon, especially since the sequel is set for a 2018 release.
