Captain Phasma Series Announced At Star Wars Celebration

Captain Phasma, one of the big breakout characters from the Force Awakens, is getting her own Marvel comic miniseries.

I always found it odd how in the world of Star Wars characters who say and do almost nothing suddenly become huge fan favorites.

In his first appearance in The Empire Strikes Back, Boba Fett was essentially just window dressing to the overall story. Mace Windu, while very cool, didn’t do a heck of a lot during the prequel trilogy except get thrown out a window.

And now we have the curious case of Captain Phasma.

First seen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Phasma doesn’t say much and just struts around following orders from Kylo Ren. The only time she did anything interesting was when she deactivated the shields at Starkiller Base and ended up in the trash compactor as a result.

But for some reason, Gwendoline Christie’s chrome-plated stormtrooper became a huge fan favorite. She ended up featured on much of the merchandise and had many fans wondering if she survived the destruction of Starkiller Base.

Turns out, Phasma did and this September, we all get to see how.

Announced at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando on Friday, Star Wars: Captain Phasma will be a four-issue miniseries that will bridge the gap between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Part of Lucasfilm’s Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi promotion, the series will be written by Kelly Thompson with artwork by Marco Checchetto.

Star Wars.com talked to the creative team and Thompson discussed how great it will be to flesh out the character of Captain Phasma.

"“It’s exciting enough when someone lets you contribute to the Star Wars universe in any real way, but when they let you create the first ever Phasma story for comics? Well, that’s about as good as it gets! Like most, I’m a huge fan of both Gwendoline Christie and Phasma. Christie is magnetic and Phasma has so much fascinating untapped potential…potential which I can’t wait to help unlock for fans in our comic.”"

Must Read: Preview: Secret Empire #1 From Marvel

If successful with retailers and popular with readers, expect more Captain Phasma in the future. She is a character that is basically a blank slate and it gives marvel a huge opportunity to play in the Force Awakens time period without stepping on anyone’s toes.

Expect Star Wars: Captain Phasma #1 to arrive on store shelves this coming September with a stunning cover by Paul Renaud.
