The film adaptation—a spinoff from 20th Century Fox’s main X-Men franchise—was first announced in May 2015. Director Josh Boone originally pitched the idea to producer Simon Kinberg and the studio as a trilogy. It’s unknown if this is still the plan going forward.

The New Mutants was created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod. The young superhero team made their debut in Marvel Graphic Novel #4 (December 1982). After the end of the first series, the characters went on to become X-Force. The New Mutants title is also famous for introducing the fourth-wall-breaking Merc with a Mouth—Deadpool.
