Preview: Generations: Phoenix & Jean Grey #1 from Marvel
By D. Goodman
Marvel has provided a preview of Generations: Phoenix & Jean Grey #1, one of the specials they promise will reshape the Marvel Universe.
For Marvel, it’s safe to say they have a whole lot riding on Generations.
Generations is the event-that’s-not-an-event that will be spinning out of Secret Empire, Marvel’s current super-mega crossover event. In it, readers will see the more modern versions of classic character travel through time and meet with the originals. Logan will team-up with X-23, Jane Foster will have an adventure with the Odinson and so forth.
Apparently is all has something to do with the Vanishing Point, which will enable these team-ups to happen. Generations will then lead into Marvel Legacy, which will relaunch the Marvel Universe later this year (yet again) with new ongoings and titles returning to their original numbering.

When it was announced, one of the more intriguing titles of Generations was the Phoenix/Jean Grey one-shot. As everyone knows, the current Jean Grey starring in X-Men: Blue is the time traveling version created by Brian Michael Bendis in All-New X-Men. This of course has led many to wonder if eventually she will turn into the Phoenix, the world-devouring cosmic force last seen in the pages of Avengers vs. X-Men.
Generations: Phoenix and Jean Grey #1 will see the teenage version travel into the past and meet a version of herself that has just become the Phoenix. And as if that wasn’t enough to get you into the comic shop, the pair will face off against Galactus and Terrax.
Sounds like a fun time will be had by all.
From the Marvel solicitation:
"A teenage girl meeting her future self – it all begins at the Vanishing Point, where past and present and now future collide for epic and game-changing adventures in this story of the GENERATIONS!Teenage Jean Grey is willing to do whatever it takes to avoid the fate that befell her predecessor. But when Jean is cast through time and comes face-to-face with the newly possessed Phoenix, will she find the key to saving herself…or learn that her fate is sealed? But what Universe changing events will be witnessed on the final pages of this story?!It’s the story that hints at what’s to come for Phoenix and Jean Grey, and you don’t want to miss this issue."
Honestly, when Generations was announced, I fell squarely into the “meh…” category. It seemed like a blatant attempt to get readers who had given up on Marvel years ago back into the fold by cashing in on the nostalgia we feel for the characters.
That said, despite myself I may be starting to warm to this idea.
