Since his last solo outing in 2008, the Hulk has had a solid presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with his next appearance being in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok. Although most fans don’t mind seeing the Jade Giant in team-up films, many would like to see him get a third chance at a standalone movie. Unfortunately, it sounds like the chances of this happening are pretty thin.

Actor Mark Ruffalo spoke with Variety at the Disney D23 Expo and declared that a solo Hulk film won’t happen due to the fact that those rights belong to Universal. He also revealed that he and Marvel Studios have discussed it, but it likely won’t happen:

"I just want to make one thing perfectly clear today, a standalone Hulk movie will never happen, because Universal has the rights to the standalone Hulk movie and for some reason, they don’t know how to play well with Marvel, and they don’t want to make money… We’ve talked about it, but I just don’t see it in the cards."

This is sure to be disappointing for fans of the character. Some already feel shortchanged due to the fact that elements of the popular Planet Hulk storyline will only be featured in Thor: Ragnarok and not be adapted into its own film.

Despite sounding adamant, Ruffalo did take to Twitter to keep fans hopeful about the possibility of another Hulk film:

It’s hard to say if it will actually happen, but at least we still have the character’s appearances in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War and the Untitled Avengers Sequel to look forward to.

Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3, 2017.
