The Gambit film could end up being a lot different than originally planned.

More from Movies

The road to the big screen has been more than bumpy for the Gambit solo film. The project has already lost two directors in Rupert Wyatt and Doug Liman, and there are scarce details on the status of the screenplay. Despite this, Channing Tatum (who has been attached to play the lead role since 2014) has revealed not only news the movie is still happening, but a specific reason for the delay.

While appearing at San Diego Comic-Con, Tatum spoke with Yahoo and revealed Fox’s reevaluating the film’s direction. The shift in plans is due to changes Deadpool and Logan have caused in the superhero genre:

"“We got really lucky. We had a first draft. It was good, but we were coming to it at a time at that creative phase of [the X-Men], where these movies went through a bit of a paradigm shift, where the X-Men movies and the superhero movies with Logan and Deadpool really broke down a lot of doors for us. We were trying to do some things that we actually weren’t allowed to do, and they just smashed down the doors, so we’re giving it a bit of a rethink.”"

Despite this, the actor would not say for sure if the film would definitely be R-rated:

"“We’re not quite going there, because I enjoyed Gambit as a kid so I don’t want to rule out PG-13.”"

Delays can mostly mean trouble for any project, but this actually makes sense. In the years since the movie was announced, the superhero genre has changed drastically, and the aforementioned films are major reasons for that. With this, it’s hard to say what the Gambit film might look like. But, if it follows the lead of recent comic book films, it has the chance to be something truly unique.
