SDCC 2017: Ryan Coogler talks about creative freedom at Marvel Studios
By Erik Swann
Ryan Coogler talks about his collaboration with Marvel Studios on Black Panther.
Based on what we’ve seen so far, Black Panther appears to have a unique look and feel compared to other Marvel Cinematic Universe installments. It’s clear to see that Ryan Coogler has a very distinct vision for the film. Fortunately, Marvel Studios was more than willing to let him execute that vision.
While speaking with Screen Rant at San Diego Comic-Con, Coogler explained the studio gave him the freedom to make the film he wanted:
More from Movies
- James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy casts more major DC characters
- New Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom trailer pushes Arthur to his limits
- 7 actors who could replace Ezra Miller as The Flash in the DC Universe
- Masters of the Universe reboot’s new domain could be at Amazon’s Prime Video Streamer
- James Gunn gives interesting update of Superman and Supergirl movies at DC Studios
"“Absolutely. To be honest with you, man, I am still everyday surprised by how brave Marvel is in terms of telling stories and the things that we are doing in this film. I can’t wait to share with the world. But absolutely! Incredible creative freedom, man! And I think that what’s great with working with this studio specifically is that the communication, you constantly feel like you are in it together. You constantly feel like we are trying to make the same movie and trying to make the best version of that movie. So that’s been my experience, but I’ve had a lot of creative freedom.”"
It’s always nice to hear that a director and a studio are on the same page, especially in the case of a big budget film. Making any film can be hard, but working with a major studio can be particularly exhausting due to working with various layers of people.
Next: Black Panther parallels our political climate
Marvel Studios mostly does quite well when working with their filmmakers. In the past, director James Gunn also spoke about the studio’s collaborative nature. Admittedly, each MCU film does have a level of uniformity, so they maintain a feeling of continuity. However, films like Guardians of the Galaxy, and even Iron Man 3, have elements that are unique to their respective directors’ styles.
It’s no secret Coogler is a talented filmmaker. And with plenty of creative freedom, this could be another nice film to add to his and Marvel Studios’ resume.
Black Panther arrives in theaters on February 16, 2018.
