During its long run, Strangers in Paradise hopped from many different publishers like Image comics, Abstract comics, and mostly self-published. The indie hit has really been a testament to what a writer/artist can do all on their own. Terry Moore has worked for most of the big comic companies like Marvel, but Strangers in Paradise was always his most creator-centric work.
Its now been announced that Moore has begun work on a film adaptation version of his classic characters along with writer-director Angela Robinson.
Strangers in Paradise ran for over a decade and ended as Moore planned in 2007. It follows the story of Katina Marie Choovanski (Katchoo), Helen Francine Peters (Francine), and their friend David Qin. The series starts out as a love triangle where Katchoo loves Francine, Francine loves David and David is in love with Katchoo. The love shapes get more complex as the series continued and new characters enter the series. A thriller element was eventually added to the series when the trio falls into trouble with people from Katchoo’s criminal past and David’s sister who works with an international crime syndicate.
The series was one of the first to present the lines between heterosexuality, homosexuality and bi-sexuality as being all just points along a spectrum and none being more relevant than another. Strangers in Paradise has been acknowledged for its LGBTQ representation and even won a GLAAD award in 2001.
Moore and Robinson will be working on the script together. The pair have known each other for several years and this project has always been on their to-do list. Robinson has talked about her excitement for the long-awaited project,
"“I’ve been wanting to adapt Strangers in Paradise for over a decade, since the first time I read it and couldn’t put it down,” Robinson stated. “Terry Moore writes real female characters with such breathtaking sensitivity.”"
