Jenny Slate is finalizing a deal to join Venom.

The Venom news just keeps on coming. We recently learned that Michelle Williams had been cast in the first entry in Sony’s Spider-Man universe. Now, another big name has been added to the growing cast list.

According to a report from Variety, Jenny Slate is in final negotiations to join Venom. Not much is known about her role right now, but the trade’s sources say that she will be playing a scientist. Sony has made no comment on the casting.

Slate has made a name for herself in the comedy world through her work on Saturday Night Live, Bob’s Burgers and Parks and Recreation. However, she has also proven to be a skilled dramatic actress as evidenced by her work in Gifted. Recently, she even took a step into the superhero genre when she voiced Harley Quinn in The Lego Batman Movie.

The project is really starting to gain momentum, as production is quickly approaching. Slate is poised to join a cast that already consists of Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed and Michelle Williams. Ruben Fleischer will direct the film from a screenplay by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinker.

The big mystery now is the identity of Slate’s character. Casting her would indicate that it will at least be a supporting role. But, will it be a character from the comics or an original creation for the movie? It’s probably only a matter of time before we find out, but until then, all we can do is speculate.
