Gambit movie has been given an official release date

Gambit has finally found a place on Fox’s film slate.
Fox’s Gambit has had a difficult road to the big screen. It has had a star in the form of Channing Tatum, but it hasn’t been able to hold on to a director. Now, things seem to be looking up as the production has now received an official release date.
Outlets including Entertainment Weekly are reporting that Gambit will open on Feb. 14, 2019, which is of course Valentine’s Day. Fox usually releases X-Men films around May, but recently, the studio has experimented with alternate dates. Last year’s Deadpool opened (successfully) in February, and the upcoming The New Mutants will hit theaters this coming April.

This is a major step for the project, and is only one of a few recent developments for it. This past week, director Gore Verbinski was reportedly in talks to helm the film.
Last week, it was reported that the X-Men villain Mr. Sinister will be the film’s antagonist, and that the search for an actor had begun.
Additionally, Christopher M of Omega Underground is reporting that the production will be a crime/heist film. Many fans expected this due to the titular character’s crime-ridden past. The trade also revealed that the project will film under the working title, “Chess.”

After spending the last few years in “development hell,” Gambit is finally getting off the ground. It does still have a ways to go before it gets to that February release date. But, with a strong lead actor and a capable director, it’s definitely moving in the right direction.
