Ant-Man and the Wasp: Everything we know so far

Ant-man was perhaps one of the biggest surprises in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The sequel has become highly anticipated.

The first Ant-man film was a nice departure from the rest of the MCU. It told a somewhat smaller story without the fate of the world on the line. It was overdue to include a version of the founding Avenger into the fold and the sequel promises to finally add the Wasp.

Most of the cast from the original are returning for the sequel; including Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, Michael Pena, Bobby Cannavale, T.I., Judy Greer, and Abby Forston. The new additions to the cast include Walter Goggins as Sonny Burch, Laurence Fishburne as Bill Foster, Randall Park as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Jimmy Woo, Hannah John-Kamen as a new villain that goes by the moniker Ghost.

Perhaps the biggest addition to the cast is Michelle Pfeifer as the original Wasp-Janet Van Dyne. Her character disappeared into a tiny pocket universe in a past adventure alongside Hank Pym and it appears as if she will return in the upcoming film. Randall Park’s Jimmy Woo is a pretty large character in the comics and ends up leading a team known as the Agents of ATLAS, but it remains to be seen just how large his role in this film will be. Another character with a possibly larger hidden is Fishburne’s Bill Foster. Foster is another hero that used the Pym particles as a superpower. He went by the names of Goliath or Giant-Man and was eventually killed in battle by an evil version of Thor in the comic book version of the Civil War.

One of the most interesting things about the new movie is Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost. The original character from the source material is male for one thing and female villains have been missing in the Marvel Studio films. Similar to Scott Lang, Ghost uses a technologically advanced suit, but hers has mainly stealth capabilities. It seems likely that Walton Goggins will be playing a similar supporting villainous role to what Justin Hammer did in Iron Man 2. It is also possible that Janet Van Dyne could return to the normal world with evil intent given her time trapped in another dimension.

Really the biggest thing to happen in Ant-Man and the Wasp is for two characters to share not only the film, but also the title. Hopefully, this isn’t a Batman and Robin situation where Wasp is relegated to a sidekick status. I mean this could be one the few superhero films where two heroes share the lead without having the obligatory moment where they have to fight each other. Evangeline Lilly brings something special to the MCU as both a scientist and fighter. Previously, only the male heroes have been both scientists and fighters. Characters like Jane Foster, Black Widow, or Gamora have been relegated to only one or the other.

We know now that in the timeline of the MCU this movie will take place not too long after the events of Captain America: Civil War; which leaves the question of how Lang escaped from the Raft prison and returned to his normal life. The plot synopsis doesn’t give us a ton to go on, but it does imply that Lang is attempting to leave superhero-ing behind until Pym and Van Dyne return to draw him back in:

"From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink: “Ant-Man and The Wasp.” In the aftermath of “Captain America: Civil War,” Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a Super Hero and a father. As he struggles to rebalance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) and Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside The Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from their past."
