Maestros #1: Written by Steve Skroce and art by Dave Stewart. This brand new series from Image Comics has been called a “masterpiece” by writer Brian K. Vaughan. On a foreign planet, the Maestro and the entire royal family have been assassinated. It turns out that his exiled son from Earth is now the heir to the Wizard King’s throne; that comes with a magical spell that turns its user into GOD.
With new enemies around every corner, can this Earth-born millennial find a way to keep his new magic kingdom? This has all the makings of becoming the next Saga or The Walking Dead.
Incredible Hulk #709: Written by Greg Pak and art by Greg Land. Amadeus Cho has been the latest version of the Hulk for a pretty short time now. He has tried to resist the anger and rage that turned Bruce Banner into such a feared monster. Now he receives a distress call from the distant planet Sakaar where the groundbreaking Planet Hulk saga unfolded. This new story comes just in time before Thor: Ragnarok gives us the live-action version of the original Planet Hulk story. Who is calling Cho for help now? Will he be able to resist the gladiatorial combat and warrior lifestyle of Sakaar? Find out in Return to Planet Hulk Part 1.
Green Lanterns #33: written by Tim Seeley and art by Matt Santorelli and Carlos Barberi. The Green Lantern pair of Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz have been forced to work together. Their adventures have taken them all across the universe and throughout the span of time. Now they are returning to Earth and this is the perfect time to jump on board this series. The two of them have seen some crazy things, but now they will be forced to get a day job to support themselves. This issue sounds like a wonderfully light-hearted way into the story of the newest Green Lanterns. This is also the start of Tim Seeley’s run on the series after Sam Humphries was apparently offered another DC comic books opportunity he could not pass up.
Cable #150: Written by Ed Brisson and art by Jon Malin. This is the first Cable issue after the Marvel Legacy new comic books initiative. Back to its original numbering, but picking up in the modern day of Marvel. When Cable was leading the X-Force team back in the 90’s, it was the beginning of a whole new era for the X-Men. Cable’s current mission is protecting the fabric of all time. Now he will re-unite with former members of the various incarnations of X-Force. He will lead the new team of Blink, X-23, Shatterstar, Longshot, Armor, and Doop as they try to solve the murder of an immortal known as Candra. This also features the start of Ed Brisson’s run on the series.
Batman #33: Written by Tom King and art by Joelle Jones. Tom King is taking Batman comic books on a new journey of self-discovery and rebirth. He has proposed to his long-time love Catwoman and she said yes. It remains to be seen how this marriage will affect the two of them, but it has been promoted as a quest for renewal and redemption. Now the two of them are leaving Gotham City and traveling the world as they encounter members of his extended family. These people are standing in the way of what these two want to accomplish. King has set Bruce Wayne on a journey to become something more than just a superhero.
Mighty Thor #700: Written by Jason Aaron and art by James Harren, Olivier Coipel, Walt Simonson, Russel Dauterman, and Chris Burnham. Another book jumping back to its original numbering, this has been hailed as the beginning of the end for the Mighty Thor. After the original Odinson was deemed unworthy the hammer passed to Jane Foster and she has wielded it through wars across the realms. Now multiple Thors from the War Thor to the original Odinson will be featured in Mighty Thor‘s 700th anniversary issue. Jane Foster has been battling cancer as her Thor alter-ego battles mythical beasts across the many planes of existence.
Next: Runaways #2 review: Gert is back
The cancer has been slowly winning the fight as each time she transforms into Thor it cleanses the chemotherapy from her body. She has chosen a life of adventure and protecting the helpless over fighting her illness as a human. One of the covers features a throwback to the Death of Captain Marvel graphic novel only with Jane Foster cradled in the arms of Death. Suffice to say, it is not looking good for Jane’s Goddess of Thunder.
These are just six of the comic books coming out this week that worth picking up, be sure not to miss new comic book day and support your local shops.
