What is Loki really up to?
During the climax of the film, when Loki heads to the trophy room to retrieve the skull of Surtur, he pauses at the Tesseract. Even though we don’t actually see Loki take the Tesseract, it’s very obvious that he did.
To refresh your memory, the Tesseract houses one of the Infinity Stones. Loki also used it in the first Avengers movie in opening a portal for the Chitauri to invade Earth. Moreover, we learned during the end-credits scene from that movie that Loki was, in fact, working for Thanos. Thus, we can logically assume Loki knows Thanos is after the Infinity Stones. His terrified look during Thor: Ragnarok‘s post-credit scene also means he recognizes Thanos’ ship, too.
It’s possible Loki could try to attempt to use to Tesseract to fight Thanos. Failing that, Loki, being the schemer he is, will make a bargain with Thanos. In exchange for his life, Loki will hand over the Tesseract and tell him where the other Infinity Stones are. Of course, he’ll just be stalling for time until he figures out a way to survive.
