Avengers: Infinity War — Where is Captain America’s shield in the trailer?

There was no sign of Captain America’s shield in the Avengers: Infinity War trailer. A previous Marvel Cinematic Universe movie partially explains this.

After two years in Wakanda, Steve Rogers emerged from the darkness in the Avengers: Infinity War trailer. New beard and all. It was his first appearance since the end of Captain America: Civil War, when he freed a handful of the Avengers from prison.

Prior to this action, Rogers had one of his most symbolic moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He gave up his famous shield, after fighting Iron Man and being told he’s not worthy of using it (Howard Stark created it in the MCU). It represented the end of an era for this character, with a new one on the way if the Infinity War trailer meant anything.

Not only did Captain America appear with a beard, he arrived without the shield. Given Black Panther’s line, “Get this man a shield,” you can expect Marvel’s most patriotic hero to receive something. However, was it already revealed in the trailer?

At the 2:00 mark, there’s the epic team-up shot of Cap, the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Black Panther, Okoye, the Hulk and War Machine, likely running toward Thanos’ army. Front and center, though, was Rogers’ arms which noticeably had something around the wrists. It appeared to be a different type of shield and, as CBR.com noted, it’s potentially tied to a comic-book storyline.

In “Avengers: Standoff!,” Rogers chose to use a shield that separated into two pieces, opting to give his classic defense weapon to Sam Wilson, who took the Captain America mantle. The latter action probably won’t happen, unless Tony Stark turns the shield (if he kept it) over to Rogers, who doesn’t accept and presents it to Wilson or James Barnes in Infinity War or Avengers 4.

This new shield would be made of Vibranium, which Wakanda, where Rogers will be in Avengers: Infinity War, has. So, expect plenty of joint airtime for Cap and T’Challa that leads to a working relationship, rather than trying to hunt each other down in Civil War.

There’s a new look for Captain America and, potentially, a new shield in Infinity War. It’s possible more changes are on the way for him, which we should learn next spring — maybe in Black Panther if Marvel drops a hint or two about Steve’s status. Will he make a surprise appearance (Chris Evans is not listed on the movie’s IMBD page)?
