The first image from Aquaman has been revealed, and its director and star teased the upcoming superhero film.
James Wan’s Aquaman is the next film on Warner Bros. and DC Film’s docket, and it promises to be something we’ve never seen from a superhero movie. While it has completed principal photography, specific plot details have been kept under wraps. Now, not only do we have a still from the film but we also have a better idea of what to expect.
EW revealed the first official image from the movie, which features a deadly serious Jason Momoa as the titular hero:

Aside from the photo reveal, both Momoa and Wan discussed the tone and story. Momoa particularly stressed how the film will greatly differ from Justice League:

"“Justice League was only a weekend in Arthur Curry’s life. This is a totally different beast. In Aquaman, you see when his parents met and what happened to him. Then the little boy being raised and finding his powers and going through that and never being accepted on either side. And then becoming this man who puts up all these walls. You just slowly see this man harden up and be completely reluctant wanting to be king and not knowing what to do with these powers he has. I think James Wan just killed it.”"
Wan added to Momoa’s point of how unique it’ll be, and says that he’s putting his personal touch on the production:
"“It’s going to look very different, it will feel very different — aesthetically, tonally, story-wise — it’s my own take. It’s a much more a traditional action-adventure quest movie.”"
Wan also spoke on the fact that Aquaman has been looked down on for much of his history, and his goal is to change people’s perception of him:
"“Aquaman has been the joke of the comic book world, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought how cool that would be. Let’s take the character everybody makes fun of, and do something really interesting with him.”"
Next: Flashpoint: Solo debut or team-up film?
Despite Justice League’s lukewarm reception, Momoa’s take on the character was viewed by many as a bright spot. Still, some craved more development for him, and that seems to be coming in his solo outing. The concept for this hero and his world is somewhat risky. But, with a talented director and a strong cast, this could very well be the superhero flick we didn’t know we wanted.
Aquaman swims into theaters on December 21, 2018.
