A definitive ranking of all eight star Star Wars movies before The Last Jedi.

This weekend, the next chapter of the Star Wars hits theaters all over the planet — Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the eighth episode of one of the most successful franchises in movie history (and a terrific movie poster). In order to fully prepare for this epic next installment, let’s take a look back at all of the great/not so great, Star Wars movies that have come out the past 40 years. Here is the definite (my) ranking of all the Star Wars films.

8. Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

I remember walking out of this movie as a kid, and it was the first time I ever hated a movie. Back then, it made The Phantom Menace look like a masterpiece.

Attack of the Clones is boring and melodramatic, as it shoves too many “love scenes” between Padme and Anakin. And we learn the biggest twist in the entire series, that Anakin doesn’t like sand. The movie leads up to the teased Clone Wars, and shows the beginning of the conflict, and that’s it. We received a decent series about the Clone Wars (two technically), but it always felt like the story could have been modified a bit so that majority of the movie features the clones attacking.

There are some interesting moments to note, though. The huge lightsaber duel at Geonosis, Mace Windu decapitating bounty hunter Jango Fett (who’s given slightly more to do than Boba Fett ever was), and we get to see CGI Yoda in action. Compared to the awkward looking CGI in the rest of the movie, Yoda looks great! This movie is a perfect example of a “set-up” movie, which is only there to tease what will happen in later films without telling a worthy story in itself, think Iron Man 2 or Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One. When people discuss how bad the prequels are, I always revert to this one as the absolute worst of the entire series.
