Disney aims for Deadpool and other properties to be R-rated

Disney CEO Bob Iger says that R-rated movies aren’t out of the question following the Disney/Fox deal.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to get a whole lot bigger now that The Walt Disney Company will own many of Fox’s Marvel properties. It’s safe to assume that characters like the X-Men and the Fantastic Four will be making their way to the MCU. However, the fate of more “mature” characters like Deadpool is still worrying some fans. Well, it looks like they may not have to be concerned anymore.
Bob Iger, the head of The Walt Disney Company, had a conference call with investors after the announcement of the historic deal. During the call, he revealed that he hopes to continue with Deadpool and possibly brand more R-rated properties:
More from Movies
- James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy casts more major DC characters
- New Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom trailer pushes Arthur to his limits
- 7 actors who could replace Ezra Miller as The Flash in the DC Universe
- Masters of the Universe reboot’s new domain could be at Amazon’s Prime Video Streamer
- James Gunn gives interesting update of Superman and Supergirl movies at DC Studios
"“It [Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool. As long as we let the audiences know what’s coming, we think we can manage that fine.”"
This is definitely surprising but welcome news. At this point, Disney is known for having a very specific image that caters to a very specific audience. And, as you probably know, that doesn’t exactly include R-rated films. Going for projects like these would be a bold move for the company and would mark a major, new chapter in its storied history.
Deadpool’s surprise box office success last year proved not only proved the character could work but also that an R-Rated superhero film could be successful. 20th Century Fox then continued this success with Logan earlier this year. With this, it’s easy to understand why Iger and Disney would want to keep making movies like these.

Deadpool and some other characters may not formally join Marvel’s shared cinematic franchise. But, it’s still good to know that audiences could have even more debaucherous adventures with the “Merc with a Mouth”.
