Star Wars fans petition to shut down Rotten Tomatoes
With divisive fan reactions to Star Wars: The Last Jedi and overwhelming praise from Rotten Tomatoes, a petition was created to shut down the review website.
Reactions to Star Wars: The Last Jedi became the polarizing topic of the holiday season. With praise, criticism, love and passionate hate for the movie, it led to debates over the events of this character’s actions or that one’s fate or something director Rian Johnson did to satisfy or anger fans. Either way, it was divisive.
As of this writing, popular review website Rotten Tomatoes gave The Last Jedi a 91 percent “Certified Fresh” rating. That’s while the Audience Score was 52 percent, lower than the maligned prequels. Fans on IMBD gave it a 7.6 out of 10 stars.
In response to this “Certified Fresh” score, a petition to shut down Rotten Tomatoes was created by Andre Gomes on Change.org (h/t ScreenRant). In the petition’s description, Gomes said this website has a “very flawed aggregate rating system.” As of this writing, he received 490 signatures.

Well, it’s safe to say Gomes will strike out on this petition. Change.org usefulness can be great, but a situation, like this, won’t result in anything. Rotten Tomatoes will continue to gather reactions from critics and review movies, with a petition to shut the website down having no impact. In fact, the site will probably review the next slate of movies that receive a Friday release or something that goes direct-to-DVD.
The fan vs. critic debate will wage on. Whether it was due to one (or multiple) character’s fate or the actions of another, this polarized the movie and made almost everything headline-worthy. It’s something that will carry through the final days of 2017 and into 2018.
