Mark Hamill has recently hinted that he would like to play Spider-Man villain Doctor Octopus in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ever since Marvel and Sony announced that they’d reached a deal to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans have speculated on which villains could join him. Spider-Man: Homecoming featured the first big-screen appearance of The Vulture and many praised Michael Keaton’s performance as the villain.

Now that we’ve seen Tom Holland’s first solo-outing as the superhero, fans have clamored for Spidey’s greatest foes, the Green Goblin or Doctor Octopus, to be brought to the MCU, and they’ve set their sights pretty highly in terms of casting suggestions.

There have been calls for Mark Hamill to be cast in the role of Otto Octavius in the MCU and recently, Hamill has hinted that he might be up for taking on the role as can be seen below:

Admittedly, liking a tweet isn’t an endorsement, but Hamill has obviously seen the suggestion.

It’s well-known that Hamill can play a good villain, he’s often been described as the greatest actor to portray the Joker and his appearances as The Trickster in The Flash have shown that he can take on different kinds of villain. Hamill’s Joker has many layers and his performances have shown this over the years.

It’s possible that the MCU could choose to approach the villain in a similar way to Sam Raimi in Spider-Man 2. Rather than simply a man bent on destroying the wall-crawler, Raimi chose to make Otto Octavius a professor seeking to create a self-sustaining fusion reaction who also happened to be Peter Parker’s hero.

If Marvel were to take this approach it’s possible that Hamill could play one of Peter’s teachers and we all know that he could play this role. His portrayal of Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi showed that he can act as a mentor to a younger hero, however reluctantly. Perhaps the MCU’s Octavius could become corrupted by his mechanical arms, just as Alfred Molina’s version of the character was.

Whatever happens with the character, The Last Jedi proved that Mark Hamill still has something to offer. Luke Skywalker was a much different character to the one we had previously met, but he was still the same character deep down. His star is high at the moment and Marvel should take advantage of this. Maybe it’s time to bring one of Spider-Man’s greatest enemies to the MCU.
