The Amazing Spider-Man #794 follow up with an event that happened a year ago. Spider-Man sealed Scorpio in a mysterious dimension and the made sure the Zodiac Key was secure. As it turns out, it wasn’t as secure as they thought after the demise of S.H.I.E.L.D. Thankfully, the good guys still manage to save the day.

Dan Slott’s run on Spider-Man is coming to an end in several issues, so having a co-writer on makes some sense as he transitions into working on Iron Man. It’ll be interesting to see if Christos Gage stays on The Amazing Spider-Man going forward or if they look for a whole new creative team. That said, the writing in this is fine. It has its moments like when Mockingbird called Spider-Man “Mr. Grouchypants.”

The coloring on this issue is fantastic. When the Zodiac Key is present, the green glow of it adds a great effect. Marte Gracia uses the various colors to cover entire scenes and it gives the book and interesting look. Put that together with the art by Stuart Immonen and inks by Wade von Grawbadger and you get a nice looking comic.

It’s nice to see Max Modell recruiting Anna Maria Marconi in this issue in the midst of the chaos. She’s no longer at Parker Industries and he offers her a job at Horizon University. With all of the recent changes, it’s great to see that a place like Horizon University is still around. In Marvel’s Spider-Man, the school is Horizon High, but the idea of the school is certainly the same.

The issue ends with a hint that Carnage plays a role soon and with Mr. Osborn involved, it can’t be anything good. Plus, Scorpio did say thst something was coming to tear Spider-Man’s world apart.

“Threat Level: Red” sounds like Spider-Man has some serious villains to go up against. With this first part having the past come back to bite him a bit, it’ll be interesting to see what they come up with next. This wasn’t the best issue, but it’s a decent start to the new story arc.
