Review: The Amazing Spider-Man (2017) #795 brings us Loki
The Amazing Spider-Man #795 gives us a look at Peter Parker’s fresh start, which isn’t all that glamorous.
Writers: Dan Slott and Christos Gage
Penciler: Mike Hawthorne
Inker: Terry Pallot
Color Artist: Marte Gracia
Letterer: VC’s Joe Caramagna
Peter Parker’s fresh start in this arc is a pretty stark difference from his life as the head of Parker Industries. He’s renting a place month-to-month since he broke up with Bobbi Morse. At work, he receives a summons from Doctor Strange, or so he thinks. This leads him straight to Loki, who is the new Sorcerer Supreme.

The previous issue tied up a loose end and with this being the second part of “Threat Level: Red,” I’ll admit that I was expecting an issue that was a little more eventful. It largely felt like set up for something coming soon. Loki and Spider-Man’s time together is fun, but it didn’t really feel crucial. They go after the fire-wasps of the Faltine and Loki turns back time just enough to save someone’s life after that encounter.
While there’s action as Spider-Man and Loki face off against the wasps, there’s no real consequences by the end of the issue for Spider-Man. Or if there are, they aren’t apparent yet. The only thing that really happens by the end is the fact that Loki seems like he’s up to no good, which isn’t exactly a surprise.

Overall, this issue felt like filler that just set up Peter’s new start. The most exciting thing happens at the end of the issue when Norman unleashes the Carnage symbiote and it takes over. That will certainly play out and is the most likely reason this story arc is “Threat Level: Red” to begin with. Dan Slott’s run is coming to and end soon and hopefully the finale is much better than this issue.
