Six Marvel movies have release dates for 2021 and 2022. What could they be?

Marvel has six movie release dates planned for 2021 and 2022, but nothing confirmed for what will fill these slots. There’s still Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, Avengers 4, Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 to sift through before viewers even think about 2021.

Much of what Marvel plans for 2021 and 2022 might depend on the events of 2018 and 2019’s movies, given they include two Avengers movies that might reconstruct the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That potentially means the death of characters and the arrival of others.

What will Marvel plan in the next three to four years? Let’s dig in and try to find out:

May 7, 2021: Black Panther 2

Black Panther might become Marvel’s highest-grossing movie of all time. It set records on its first weekend and nearly received universal acclaim. So there’s little reason to believe Marvel will not attempt a sequel.

T’Challa already battled one person for Wakanda’s throne, but threats remain imminent to this country, especially given the mid-credits scene. However, there’s also Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 to flesh out over the next 14 months, with the former confirmed to feature at least some of Wakanda. Whatever happens in these two movies might impact the direction a Black Panther sequel goes and the next threat to this beloved Marvel character.

As for a projected release date, May 7, 2021 lines up Black Panther 2 to be three years after its predecessor. Marvel might want it for 2020, to quickly capitalize on its box office success, but most franchises (Captain America, Guardians of the Galaxy, Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3, Thor: Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok) had gaps of three years or more between moves. Iron Man and Iron Man did not, and Spider-Man: Homecoming and its sequel will not, either, with a projected 2019 release. So, the safe assumption is Black Panther 2 in 2021.

Then again, after the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, there’s nothing else confirmed for the Avengers 4 fallout.
