Peggy Carter

If Marvel wants to take the most recent version of Captain America to its cinematic universe, it must embark on a strange turn of events. Yes, that’s the revival of Peggy Carter.

Played by Hayley Atwell, Carter was a prominent part of Captain America: The First Avengers. It not only showcased Steve Rogers’ origin story, but tied a romance between agent and supersoldier. Moviegoers will remember Steve’s desire for one dance with Peggy, which never happened since he crashed into the Arctic, was found but did not wake up for nearly 70 years.

In the present-day, Rogers saw Peggy in her old age. She died in Captain America: Civil War. However, when has death stopped anything in superhero movies?

Pulling off Peggy’s return would be difficult. If the time-travel theories for Avengers 4 are true, it means Earth’s Mightiest Heroes could go back to the 1940’s, whether it’s to fix an aberration (hello, Legends of Tomorrow) or something else that’s impossible to predict since the future of the MCU is exactly that. What if Steve takes Peggy with him to the present? She may refuse to let him go again, and jump 70 years into the future, thinking there will be a life with Cap.

Of course, Rogers will not be there once Avengers 4 ends. Does that mean she watches him die in battle? If so, it could be enough inspiration for her to pick up the pieces and fight, presumably Thanos.

Exiles, which features Peggy as Captain America, does not hit shelves until May, so no one knows how she gets powers, unless it’s an identical story to Steve. The same would go for her in the MCU, which complicates this time-traveling role change.
