6. Yondu Udonta

Let me be straight with you: Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn has said Yondu is not coming back. His death in Vol. 2 served important purposes, including saving Peter Quill’s life, giving him closure to his father issues, and teaching him “sometimes the thing you’re searching for your whole life is right there by your side all along.”

Yet we lost our roguish Mary Poppins too early; as played by Michael Rooker, he brought an incredible presence and heart to the Guardians franchise. For argument’s sake, let’s say I could change Gunn’s mind through compelling oratory and a few stiff drinks.

More from Movies

Though bringing back Yondu back might seem like over-indulging fans, it would serve greater purposes. Yondu could buttress the potential Ravagers movie teased at the end of Vol. 2; a familiar face could help sell audiences on characters even more obscure than Star-Lord and crew first were. He could similarly offer the Guardians franchise a pick-me-up if it starts flagging down the road.

As to who would resurrect Yondu, the most obvious candidate would be Quill himself, whom I’ve previously theorized is a good candidate to wield the gauntlet. I think Quill also remains immature enough to wield the Infinity Gauntlet – a power no one should have – for his personal desires. He might even go a step further and resurrect his mother.

Resurrecting Yondu could also add some drama to Guardians Vol. 3. Gamora already saw Quill tempted to play god in Vol. 2; resurrecting Yondu would be an abuse of power that could create a new rift between them.
