Review: Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider (2017) #18

Back in issue 14, Ben Reilly paid a visit to Quentin Beck and that visit comes back to haunt him a bit in the latest issue. Misty Beck is at the casino because she will be performing a trick for a charity event. She’ll be making the whole casino disappear and she insists that her dad be there for it.

Naturally, Ben’s curiosity (and the fact that his spider sense went crazy) leads him to look into Misty. He knows that something is up, but he just can’t pinpoint what it is yet, so he enlists some help from Dusk and Kaine.

While I think that this is going to be a fun story, I do want to point out that this issue marks a change up with the art. André Lima Araújo is now on art and I’m not enjoying it as much as I did when Will Sliney was on the book. When Kaine and Ben are in costume, it just looked a little more bland than before.
Next: Venom #1: A behind-the-scenes look
With this series taking place in Las Vegas, there are bound to be some unique stories that you might not get in any other setting and using the Beck family here is a great choice. Peter David certainly has some good ideas for this character and where to take him, which has made this run a pleasure to read so far.

The Mysterio and Mysteria adventure will continue in the next issue and hopefully Ben finds a way to get the casino back since it’s being held hostage by the Mindless Ones. This issue is mostly set up for what’s to come.
