4. Daredevil Season 2
The second season of Daredevil started off with a bang as Punisher blasted his way through Hell’s Kitchen. The first quarter of the season was the best that Marvel Netflix has delivered thus far with Matt Murdock butting heads against Frank Castle.
“New York’s Finest” was most captivating when Punisher had Daredevil tied up in order to prove that Matt had to get his hands dirty to produce real results. Punisher tied a gun to Daredevil’s hand and tried to sway him to kill a mobster. After Frank provoked a nearby biker gang, the episode concluded with Matt fleeing the building, fighting his way down the stairs with one hand tied to a chain and another strapped to an empty gun – it is the single greatest fight scene in television history.
An even more brutal brawl takes place later in the season when Kingpin sets loose some jailbirds on Punisher. Unfortunately the Punisher storyline slowly took a back seat to Elektra and the Hand. The supernatural resurrections never meshed with this show’s down to earth genre elements. It becomes a drawback for this larger universe when the Hand would play a larger role in Iron Fist and The Defenders.
Never forgetting that the devil of Hell’s Kitchen practices law to pay the bills, the courtroom drama is played to full effect in the case against Frank Castle. Just like in the comics, Murdock is the go to lawyer for other superheroes, but it was Foggy who stepped in to tip the scales of justice in Punisher’s favor. Matt and Foggy’s professional disagreements tested the limits of their personal relationship splitting up the Murdock and Nelson firm.
The second stretch set up future shows. Punisher became close with Karen Page, a connection that would spill over into his own solo series. Charlie Cox’s extensive development of the featured hero solidified that he would be the leading man among the superhero group in The Defenders mini-series, where Daredevil would finish the battle against the Hand.
