3. Jessica Jones Season 1

There has never been a more perfect time for Jessica Jones. She is the embodiment of female power and not in a bright and shiny Supergirl kind a way. Jones’ tragic past molded her into a true representative for people that lived through some terrible ordeals.

In response, she is no nonsense through and through; she gets the job done and it is not always nice and neat, she often has to get down and dirty. She drinks hard, curses freely, and doesn’t repress her sexuality. As Jones, Krysten Ritter gives the finest performance of any actor in the Marvel Netflix universe, male or female.

Establishing a relatable well-rounded heroine is one thing, but what made this one of the top Marvel Netflix seasons was the Purple Man as her tormenter. He was an impeccable opposite of Jessica Jones, like two chemicals that combust when mixed together. Jessica Jones used the Purple Man to analyze sex and violence via psychological thriller. This was stimulating ground to cover for a superhero format and you would have a hard time finding a more appropriate narrative interpretation of the permanent effects of a victimized woman.

Watching Jessica struggle to overcome her trauma and come out the other side even stronger was exceptional. Other characters also made a lasting impression, such as Malcolm with his drug addiction, Hogarth who wields a different type of power as an authoritative attorney, and Trish who has a unique dynamic with Jessica as her adoptive sister.

Jessica Jones Season 1 also introduced Luke Cage, and unlike Iron Fist’s short stint in Luke Cage Season 2, Power Man worked his way in and out of the first season of Jessica Jones with a competent cognizance for plot and character arcs. On paper, Jessica and Luke are an odd pairing, yet they have always been a favored comic book couple. Since their relationship was a highlight of a successful show, it wouldn’t be surprising if they reunite down the road in one of their eponymous series.
