Review: The Amazing Spider-Man (2018) #1 gets a fresh start
The Amazing Spider-Man #1 begins its “Fresh Start” run and it’s filled with amazing surprises. Read on for a spoiler-filled review.
Dan Slott took Amazing Spider-Man through many different adventures and storylines. He had Spidey switch minds with Doc Ock,he became rich, he faced the Red Goblin and he even teamed up with other Spider-Men from alternate dimensions. Now, Nick Spencer has arrived to take Spidey back to the basics.
Peter is currently sharing an apartment with Randy Robertson, who is the son of Robbie Robertson, the editor of The Daily Bugle. Sadly, Peter also shares the apartment with Fred Myers, who we know as the villain Boomerang. As if things weren’t hard enough for ol’ Pete, his graduate degree might be taken away for something Doc Ock wrote while he was in his body. Because of this accusation of plagiarism, Peter is fired from The Daily Bugle. Even Aunt May is mad at him!

To make matters worse, it seems that no one is appreciating his help as he tries to assist the Avengers in stopping a supposed “alien invasion.” It turns out that it is all just a fake simulation caused by Spidey’s villain Mysterio (“how embarrassing”). But, there is one positive thing for Spider-Man in this issue, and we will get back to that in a minute. The comic ends with Peter being sent into a graduate class for a “second chance,” but the class is taught by the Lizard (not Doctor Connors, but THE LIZARD)! I can’t wait to see how that one turns out.

Overall, I really enjoyed this issue. I could not find anything wrong with it. My favorite thing about The Amazing Spider-Man #1 is the one positive surprise that Peter receives. Peter finally decides to admit to Mary Jane that he still loves her and doesn’t want to be without her in his life. They end up kissing, and she tells him that they will always be together. Now, for the first time since their marriage was erased in One More Day (at least in the ASM series), MJ and Peter are in a relationship again! Maybe they’ll end up getting married again, but for now I am fine with this.

What I want to know, though, is who is the masked person that Mysterio was working for? Whoever he is, he has some sort of bug power and knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. I’m guessing that Spidey will face him sooner or later. For now, keep writing amazing issues like this, Nick!
