Review: Spider-Man Annual (2018) #1 brings back Miles
Miles Morales returns in Spider-Man Annual #1 with two new stories to tide us over for now.
Brian Michael Bendis wrapped up his run on Spider-Man earlier this year. While a new Miles Morales series hasn’t officially been announced, he’s at the forefront of Spider-Man Annual #1 with BryanEdward Hill. Hill writes the main story for the issue with a back up story by Emily Ryan Lerner coming in at the end.
The main story bounces between the past and present. We get a first look at the homemade, last minute suit that Miles first uses when he’s at an event and it ends up being under attack. The suit was designed by Nelson Blake II and has a pretty simple design, much like Peter’s homemade suit.
In the present day, Miles is fighting Morbius on his birthday and it leads to the flashback of a previous birthday when he was at Brooklyn Visions Academy. His fellow classmate Brent tries to set Miles up with his sister Olivia. Just as the two start hanging out at the event, trouble hits.

After having received money from his uncle, Miles pays him a visit to return it because he says that it does matter where it came from. Even after first getting his powers Miles has a good sense of who he is as a person. He doesn’t want any part of whatever shady dealings his uncle is involved in.
Nelson Blake II and Alitha E. Martinez are the artists for the past scenes and Mark Bagley is the penciller for the present day ones. Blake II and Martinez do a nice job, especially with the action scenes. However, it’s always a joy to see Bagley’s work.
The story at the end is a fun take on life as a high school kid. Ganke is taking his driver’s test and chaos ensues as he nearly gets mowed down by an 18-wheeler. Thankfully, Miles went along for the test and is able to stop things from getting out of hand just in time. It’s fun but doesn’t add much that’s important to Miles’ story.
While this isn’t the best Miles Morales story we’ve been graced with, it is a fun one. It explores his past in a new way and there’s plenty more story to tell with the character.
