DCEU: Ranking the rumored movies in development
By Matt Moore
5. Cyborg
After years in the comics and in animated television series and films, Cyborg finally made his first live-action appearance in 2017’s Justice League. While he was teased in Batman v. Superman we finally got to see Victor Stone in all his cybernetic glory. The performance by actor Ray Fisher was positive and he seemed to have a genuine affection for playing the character. Reports are that his role was significantly altered during reshoots by Joss Whedon.
There have been plans for Cyborg to continue appearing in DCEU films. First there was the rumor that he’d have a role in Flashpoint before that was reworked to a more Flash-centric film. A Cyborg solo film was announced in October 2014 along with a number of other titles. However, the performances of Batman v. Superman and Justice League altered the slate of DCEU movies and it’s unclear where Cyborg fits. Actor Joe Morton, who played Victor’s father Dr. Silas Stone, last .commented that production could begin in 2020.
Cyborg would pull one of the few positives out of Justice League. Fisher did well to capture the reluctant hero persona and his scenes with Morton provide groundwork for exploring the father-son relationship. Cutting director Zack Snyder’s original plan to kill Silas in Justice League could actually be a positive for a Cyborg film.
Developing Cyborg could also help the DCEU push towards a version of the Teen Titans especially if Nightwing is actually made. Victor could bring his experience working alongside Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman to a different, younger group of heroes. His relationship with technology and the digital world would also be relevant to 21st century audiences.
Cyborg would also put the spotlight on a minority character, reflecting the overall movement towards more diversity and inclusion in the motion picture industry. Movies like Wonder Woman and Black Panther have been praised not only for being quality films but breaking the mold on traditional superhero pictures.
