Credit: Warner Bros. and DC Comics for Suicide Squad (2016) — (L-R) Margot Robbie as Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Waylon Jones/Killer Croc, Karen Fukuhara as Tatsu Yamashiro/Katana, Joel Kinnaman/Rick Flag, Will Smith as Floyd Lawton/Deadshot and Jai Courtney as Digger Harkness/Captain Boomerang

1. An R Rating

In 2016, fans thought they’d get a rated R Suicide Squad. Why? Because this group forced to save the world were violent villains. Unfortunately, outside of the opening sequence, nothing about them felt “bad.” The Avengers killed more people than Suicide Squad, and it wasn’t exactly the dark and bloody action film we anticipated.

Suicide Squad had an opportunity to be the rated R film Batman v. Superman wasn’t. It’s not just about following the success of Deadpool, but in many ways, it made sense. Simply put, there’s no way a movie featuring Harley Quinn, El Diablo and Joker should be anything but rated R.

From still shots to trailers, we were teased with one thing but presented with another. The out of place family dynamic and lack of violence played a role in hurting the film. We hope Suicide Squad 2 can capitalize on what made the comics great – blood and violence. An R-rated Suicide Squad was a missed opportunity for the DCEU. We expect it not to happen again.

Next. Rumor: Matt Reeves hands in first draft of The Batman script. dark

Suicide Squad 2 has an opportunity to feed off what Walter Hamada does well. If New Line Cinema’s Conjuring franchise is evidence, then Suicide Squad is in good hands. Todd Stashwick’s vague interview does promise a different Suicide Squad. Of course, that’s if WB steps back and allow the director to make his Suicide Squad. If they do, there’s room to improve on the original.
