X-Men: 12 best and worst character decisions made by Fox

4. Hit – Beast

Beast barely made the hit list. The original trilogy didn’t use him enough but the soft reboot did a fantastic job. No matter  which depiction of Hank McCoy you point to — they were equally great. In the original trilogy, Kelsey Grammer played mild-mannered yet ragging activist. Like most, we wish Grammer was featured more because of how perfectly he played the role in X-Men: Last Stand. We wanted more Beast and X-Men: First Class gave it to us.

Nicholas Hoult brilliantly played a young version of Hank. We got to see who he was before he became Beast. Hoult’s Hank was someone who wasn’t sure of himself. He was still a mild-mannered genius but struggle with the idea of being a mutant.

By Days of Future Past, Hank had grown more confident resembling his comic book form. Still, he wasn’t there yet and we were okay with it. What Fox allowed was for us to watch a heroes journey. X-Men: Apocalypse was more like Beast than any other movie and we expect to see him true Beast form in Dark Phoenix.

3. Miss – Rogue

We mentioned how Rogue’s relation to Mystique wasn’t a factor in the original trilogy, but it’s more to it than that. We get it, having her with Captain Marvel’s powers didn’t make sense. Still, it doesn’t mean that they had to strip Rogue of all the qualities that made her a beloved X-Men.

Rogue was void of that southern charm, confidence, and spunky personality we loved about her. If they wanted to depict a more toned down version they should have at least done something that resembles a version of the character we know.

Fox could have opted to give fans the gothic, loner, abandoned version of Rogue. Maybe it was Anna Paquin’s portrayal. Either way, Fox didn’t do enough to make Rogue feel like a live-action version of the X-Men.

Moreover, there weren’t any emotional ties to Mystique and her emotional struggle with leaving the Brotherhood, which was also ignored. Instead, we were left with a romantic story-arc with a young female mutant who didn’t want to be a mutant anymore.  Rogue has a great story that’ll work well for her character introduction into the MCU.
