Ever since I started to review Marvel Super Hero Adventures, I always had in mind this is a series made for kids. That way, I could give an opinion about it based on its target audience and what it tried to accomplish. But for the very first time, I forgot I was reading a comic book made for a younger audience and got lost in its great action and funny jokes. And when MSHA has even better fight-scenes than a more mature series (like Venom: First Host) you know it’s doing something incredibly good.

Because of this, First Day Of School feels a lot different from any other entry in the series, and I loved that. However, there isn’t too much emphasis on the lesson this time around. That didn’t bothered me at all, but fans of the series may not like it that much. Even so, everyone will undoubtedly enjoy this issue and its perfect pairing of heroes.

The story

For once in the series, the villain actually has a plan and it’s not a bad one. As a result, a bit of intensity is added to an already dangerous situation. Nevertheless this story balances perfectly action, humor and the interpretation of the heroes. Spider-Man’s personality is as true to the character as you can get. That means he will make a lot of jokes, but also get worried about trying to save everyone. I certainly enjoyed that a lot, and it made this amazing issue stand out even more.

More from Spider-Man

Captain Marvel, on the other side, proves why she’s one of the most powerful heroes ever. It was great seeing her in action and deal with most of the fighting. However, she also cracks some jokes here and there. Altogether, Captain Marvel and Spider-Man are the second best pairing of the series so far, only behind Spidey and Dr. Strange (but that was mostly because they changed bodies).

The art

If you’ve been following the series, you’ll notice the art-style here is different. At first, I missed Dario Brizuela’s illustrations. But as I kept reading I started to like even more and more Mario Delpennino’s take on the the series. It’s a bit more mature, but it still has a distinctive cartoon-y design. And even though I do not prefer it over Dario’s drawings, it still makes the series justice.

Overall I really liked this issue. Not in a “it’s a great comic for kids” way, but in a really, really honest way. The action was great, the humor was top-notch, the story was good and the lesson wasn’t bad at all (even if there wasn’t a lot of emphasis on it). Spider-Man feels like the great hero he’s meant to be, and Captain Marvel shows why she’s the mightiest Marvel superhero.
