Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead will join Margot Robbie in DC’s Birds of Prey.
Birds of Prey is still a couple of years away, but the production has been gaining serious momentum as of late. Now, it appears the upcoming DC Comics film adaptation has cast two of its lead characters.
Variety reports that Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead have been cast in the film. Smollet-Bell will play Black Canary, while Winstead will play Huntress. The two will join Harley Quinn actress and producer Margot Robbie and director Cathy Yan. Neither Warner Bros. nor reps from both actresses have commented on the matter.
Just last week it was reported that several actresses were being considered for roles. Aside from Smullett-Bell and Winstead, actress like Sofia Boutella and Gugu Mbatha-Raw were also reported to be in the mix.

Both characters have had storied histories in DC Comics. Black Canary (Dinah Lance) was introduced back in 1947 and was one of DC’s earliest superheroines. Lance is a streetfighter with the ability to emit an ultrasonic scream. She also has a deep-rooted history with fellow hero Green Arrow.
Huntress, on the other hand, has gone through a number of notable changes throughout her publication history. In one instance, the character was actually Helena Wayne, the daughter of Batman and Catwoman from an alternate universe. The film will include the Helen Bertinelli version of the heroine, who became a vigilante after her mafia family was killed. Eventually, she established herself as a hero.
Of all the projects Warner Bros. and DC are developing, Birds of Prey seems to be moving along the most quickly. It recently even received an official release date. If fans weren’t excited for the movie already, then this is sure to create some hype. Birds of Prey hits theaters on February 7, 2020.
