Shocking, Rosie Perez joins Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell rounding out the girl-gang, Birds of Prey.
Warner Bros. rounds out the new heroes of Gotham, Birds of Prey. Last week the studio announced the casting of Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Huntress and Black Canary respectively. According to The Wrap, the R-rated girl-gang flick just found its Renee Montoya in Rosie Perez.
Perez broke into the Hollywood scene in Spike Lee’s 1989, Do the Right Thing and has gone on to star in over 67 other films and television shows. One of her most notable roles came in 1992 as the fast-talking super intelligent, Gloria in White Men Can’t Jump. Perez has done it all from tv to lending her voice in animations like Elena of Avalor, to Broadway. Perez also hosted the daytime talk show, The View.

Aside from acting Perez is a published author and also known for philanthropy and activism. Still, with all her accolades, this is Perez’s first role in a comic book movie.
What it could mean for Birds of Prey?
In a Batman-less Gotham City, Perez will play Gotham City detective, Renee Montoya. One of her goals will be to take down the aforementioned crime lord, who has plans for a young assassin, Cassandra Cain.
Montoya was a character originally created for Batman: The Animated Series before making her DC Comics debut in Batman No. 475. In the New 52, Montoya eventually becomes the superhero known as the Question after the death of her mentor, the original Question.
Since Perez is 54, it doesn’t look like she’ll portray the New 52 version of Renee Montoya aka the Question. Instead, she’ll likely play a veteran detective who knows all too well the darkness that exists in Gotham without Batman. She understands the value of the city’s heroes and without the Caped Crusader and a common goal to take down Black Mask, she begrudgingly joins the Birds of Prey.
There’s no official word on the exact time period writer Christina Hudson (Bumblebee) script takes place in or which Batman arc she borrowed from. We say it’s Batman: No Man’s Land.
Moreover, we’re still awaiting casting news for Black Mask and Cassandra Cain to round out the main cast.
