9. Black Panther
This movie could have been a big failure because Black Panther wasn’t a household name. Even after T’Challa made his debut in Captain America: Civil War and became a popular character, there was no guarantee that people were going to flock to the movies to go see a movie starring him. Over a billion dollars earned at the theater and the movie was a success for multiple reasons.
First off, Michael B. Jordan played one of the best villains in a movie. And not just in a superhero film. He may have been one the most ruthless and murderous antagonists we’ve seen in a movie with a just motive. Second, there were the women of Wakanda. They were strong, intelligent, fierce, funny, and loyal. They didn’t need a man to save them (looking at you Lois Lane and Gwen Stacy). In fact, in the end, it was the women of Wakanda who ended up saving T’Challa.
Black Panther balanced action, comedy, and kept a great story from start to finish. It made you question right and wrong when it comes to your morals, how far you would go to avenge your family, and staying true to yourself and your culture. It was one of the deepest movies we’ve seen in a long time.
