Review: Spider-Girls #1 follows the Spider-Totems

facebooktwitterreddit

Spider-Girls #1 focuses on Anya Corazon’s knowledge of the Spider-Totems and it takes them on an interesting journey.

There are spoilers ahead for Spider-Girls #1.

May “Mayday” Parker and Anya Corazon find themselves on Earth-18119, which is where MJ and Peter have a daughter named Annie. Her powers have been off lately and it’s because of the Inheritors and the Spider-Totems. Anya and Mayday are out to get answers and in this issue, they get one step closer to finding them.

Since Jody Houser worked on Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows, I like that Marvel has her writing this title. It gives great continuity between that series and the big event. Annie is still just a kid, but she has unique abilities and Houser already has a great understanding of that and she gets to use that to her advantage in this issue.

The art and colors from Andrés Genolet and Tríona Farrell, respectively, is well done. They capture the essence of this Earth that hasn’t been touched by the Inheritors so far. Even Mayday needs a moment to take it all in and as a reader, I certainly did the same thing. It’s a great use of combining the story with the visual and making you feel what Mayday is feeling.

The Spider-Girls have a plan and it’s one worth seeing through. Peter and MJ understand this enough to go join the larger fight and leave them to it. We get a great look at their family dynamic and it instantly makes so much sense as to why they work so well together, even when they don’t always agree on things.

Overall, Spider-Girls looks like it’ll be a fun mini-series to follow during the events of Spider-GeddonI actually enjoyed this more than the main issues that I’ve read so far for the event. I’m looking forward to what comes next.
