The Adventures of Supergirl (Supergirl season 2 episode 1)

Supergirl‘s first season was a wonderfully triumphant feel-good story about Kara Danvers’ attempt to become as a good a hero as her more-famous cousin, Superman. However, it wasn’t perfect, and one of its main issues stemmed from the fact that the producers weren’t allowed to really use Superman – who featured only in text conversations and occasionally popped up in a CGI-rendered form on the horizon.

Thankfully, this all changed during the summer hiatus and the writers wasted no time bringing the Man of Steel into the fray in the Season 2 premiere, with Tyler Hoechlin donning the red cape. And what better way to do that than by having him save an aircraft?

As the Venture descended from the skies, both Supergirl and Superman came to the rescue, teaming up for the first time ever as they maneuvered the aircraft to safety. From their impressive shows of strength to Blake Neely’s triumphant score (that certainly paid tribute to John Williams’ classic Superman theme), this opening sequence was nothing short of brilliance, and it set the tone for the remainder of the strong episode, as the pair would later team up to save National City from the collapsing Luthor Corp building.

The episode is also notable for a number of other reasons as it marked the beginning of the full-time end for Calista Flockhart’s Cat Grant and featured the debut of Katie McGrath’s Lena Luthor – all of which helped us realize that Season 2 was destined to be a very different type of adventure. But thanks to the strength of the episode, it paved the way for what was undoubtedly an even better one.
