Pilot (The Flash season 1 episode 1)
Rounding out our hat-trick of pilots is the very first episode of The Flash.
Over two years after revolutionizing superhero TV with Arrow, Greg Berlanti began producing a spin-off show centered on an even more iconic character, The Flash. Following on from Barry Allen’s introduction in Arrow, the show would focus on the character’s journey to solving his mother’s murder and clearing his father’s name, all while gaining super-speed in the process.
The show’s pilot episode reintroduced us to Barry, adding a little more background to his story, before his encounter with the lightning bolt that put him in a coma for nine months – an event that ultimately gave him super-speed. With his good heart and motivation to be more than he was, Barry soon convinced the team at S.T.A.R. Labs to help him take down criminal, Clyde Mardon, who possessed weather-controlling abilities, and as a result, he became The Flash.
This exhilarating adventure proved to be the first in a very long line of them, but it was undoubtedly a risky one. The show introduced super-powers and metahumans into the once-grounded Arrowverse, making it seem a lot more, for lack of a better term, comical than before. Moreover, The Flash itself was light-hearted, hopeful and was essentially everything that Arrow wasn’t.
Thankfully, all of these risks paid off in a big way, as the show was the perfect yin to Arrow‘s yang, offering up equally high-quality programming while giving us something quite different. The Flash took the Arrowverse to a new place, making it feel so much bigger – both literally and figuratively – as it gave us a ton of rich new characters, locations and storylines to explore. And it did it all in its very first episode. The Flash‘s pilot episode was nothing short of a triumph.
