Fast Enough (The Flash season 1 episode 23)

The Flash‘s debut season was a masterclass in storytelling. From the mystery surrounding the Reverse-Flash’s identity to Barry Allen’s deep-rooted desire to save his mother, the show was full of compelling narratives and internal conflict – and this was never more evident than it was when everything came together in its flawless season finale.

Gifted with the opportunity to change the timeline by his archenemy, Eobard Thawne, Barry was faced with the realization that he could undo his own mother’s death – all he had to do was help the Reverse-Flash return to his own time. It didn’t take long for him to accept the offer and thus, he returned to that fateful night to put things right.

However, things took a surprising turn when his future-self (who was also present) warned him against that and, in a cruel twist, Barry had to stand by and listen while his mother was killed all over again. He then emotionally comforted her as she died, telling her that he and his father were okay. A raw, beautiful and tender scene anchored by award-worthy performances from Grant Gustin and Michelle Harrison, this was undoubtedly one of the most heartbreaking moments in TV history.

Barry’s impossible decision brought an end to the first season’s storyline, but that didn’t stop the drama from increasing tenfold, when the time-travel resulted in the opening of a wormhole right above Central City, leaving us with an edge-of-seat cliffhanger that ensured we would all return for Season 2.

All in all, “Fast Enough” was an incredibly satisfying culmination of The Flash‘s near-perfect freshman season. It was a heartbreaking conclusion of one adventure and an unnerving beginning of another. And it was, without a doubt, the greatest episode that the Arrowverse has ever seen.
