Review: Marvel Super Hero Adventures: Captain Marvel – Frost Giants Among Us! No.1

MSHA is back and bigger than ever! With many incredible heroes, amazing interactions and two good stories, this issue will please every reader alike regardless of the age.

Remember that great scene in Avengers: Age Of Ultron in which the whole team hanged at the Avengers Tower, and each member tried to lift up Thor’s hammer? Not only it was hilarious, but it was arguably the best part of the whole movie. The audience had the chance to feel the great chemistry between the Avengers and to see them act not only as a team but also as friends. Now, imagine that scene done in the MSHA style, with many more superheroes and different activities for each one. If it sounds any fun it’s because it is actually a lot of fun! The Snow Day storyline is the heart of this issue, bringing together many Marvel characters for one special mission. Fortunately, the other story (Ahoy, Spidey!) manages to entertain the reader too! As it features one of Spider-Man’s most problematic issues: the inability for him to swing when there are no buildings around.

Even if the first story is more entertaining than the second one, they both manage to be a hit. It doesn’t matter if you want to buy this issue for a little cousin of yours, or for yourself. It will be a great read for everyone who takes a look at it! And that’s saying a lot for a series that’s designed especially for children. So, without further ado, here’s our review of MSHA: Captain Marvel – Frost Giants Among Us! No. 1.

The good

Iron Man, Squirrel Girl, Captain America, Miles Morales, Black Widow, Dr. Strange, and many more iconic heroes appear in the same issue, in the same storyline! There’s even one (small) action sequence where they fight as a team, helping each other to bring down some Frost Giants. Not only is it fun to read, but also fun to see. The dialogs and illustrations are incredible, with each member of the team having a distinctive design and managing to stay in character with what they say.

Of course, MSHA is a series made for a younger audience, so characters like the Hulk may not be as destructive or dark as they usually are on their own series. However, most of their personality is intact, even if is sometimes toned down a little in order to have a friendlier approach towards the story and the reader. This isn’t a huge deal, though, as you probably won’t be thinking of it when you see Peter Parker, Captain America, and Milles Morales join forces (on a great way) in order to fight the bad guys.

More from Spider-Man

Ahoy, Spidey!, on the other hand, is a short and simple story. It may not be as ambitious as the one before it, but it delivers a great premise in which Spider-Man must follow a boat. Needless to say, things aren’t as simple for our hero who needs to attach his webs to skyscrapers in order to traverse the city. This is very entertaining to see, as Spider-Man even has to water ski at some point in order to keep the chase going. So even if the story and the scope of Ahoy, Spidey! are very simple, the challenge it makes Spidey face is definitely worth it.

The bad

For a MSHA, there isn’t anything bad at all to say here. However, it’s worth remembering that these stories are usually a bit short and don’t have any surprising plot twists, mature visuals, or big action sequences (with one noticeable exception) as the rest of comic books tend to do. They are simple, direct and designed to make the reader have a fun time. Of course, they almost always succeed in this regard (especially with this great issue). So it’s just a matter of knowing what you’re in for in order to have a good and possibly amazing read!

Overall, this is one of MSHA’s finest. With a lot of superheroes, great illustrations, funny dialog and a challenging situation for Spider-Man. Fortunately, not only little kids will be able to find enjoyment in this one. It’s so well crafted even I, as a comic book fan, genuinely liked it a lot! So are you planning on reading this issue?
