3. Hawkeye No. 14-16
Writer Kelly Thompson has quickly amassed a notable comic book career for herself. She went from novelist and frequent critic of comics on Comic Book Resources to racking up a steady stream of runs on licensed titles across several publishers. As proof, this won’t be Thompson’s sole appearance on this list! Regardless, this remains her longest run on a comic book for Marvel, and it may have led to her ultimately signing an exclusive contract for the company.

Mostly alongside artist Leonardo Romero, this series chronicled the life and times of Kate Bishop, former Young Avengers member and current P.I. in California. As the series wound down, Bishop reunited with her haphazard mentor Clint Barton, the original Hawkeye, to help solve a case that involved Madame Masque, a time traveler, and her dead mother. Thompson’s voice for the character was immediately authentic and led the prism through which this book is read.
Since its end in March, Thompson continued the adventures of Kate and her friends in her relaunch of West Coast Avengers. And while that series is terrific, it hasn’t quite reached the heights of this, Thompson’s greatest run on a Marvel title. From the sassy tone of the lead heroine to the amazing artwork, Hawkeye was the syndicated comic book crime show that readers never knew they wanted. Between Ghostbusters, Uncanny X-Men and Mr. & Mrs. X, 2018 was a big year for Thompson. Yet, this may be the run that proves the benchmark for subsequent works!
