Despite conflicting reports, the Avengers: Endgame title had been planned for a while before it was announced.

Marvel Studios kept the public in suspense for months before they finally revealed the name of the next Avengers movie to be Endgame. There were numerous possibilities when it came to the title, and fans and pundits like had different ideas. But ultimately, Endgame was Marvel’s choice, and that had apparently been the plan for some time.

MTV News caught up with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige at the this year’s Golden Globe Awards, and the producer revealed that the Endgame title was chosen early on. As many fans will remember, Doctor Strange uttered the term in Avengers: Infinity War, and Feige confirmed that this was indeed a direct reference to the sequel:

"“It was in place before we started developing the movie or just as we were developing it, yes. So, Doctor Strange says that line because we knew it was the title.”"

As mentioned, before Avengers: Endgame was officially announced, various title rumors flooded the web. Titles like “Infinity Gauntlet” or “Avengers Assemble” (which was an impossibility) were some of the most common. Not long before the reveal, “Annihilation” became a very popular prediction, especially considering that title refers to a major story arc in the comics.

Marvel Studios and directors Joe and Anthony Russo seemed to enjoy toying with fans about what the film would be called. The Russos, in particular, would occasionally post teases on social media. Despite this, Feige later admitted that their plan to keep the name a secret somewhat backfired.

Endgame makes the most sense of all the proposed titles. Aside from Doctor Strange’s line, the term, endgame, refers to the final stage of a game or event. Although this film won’t be the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it will signify the end of an era in the franchise. Needless to say, fans are in for an emotionally draining experience when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26, 2019.
