Deadpool 3 is in development and going in a different direction
By Mark Lynch
Deadpool 3 will be going in a different direction. Is this good or bad?
The acquisition of the 20th Century Fox Marvel franchises has been a gift and a curse. The good news is the X-Men will now be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans will finally get to see things like Wolverine fighting the Hulk or Storm and Beast joining the Avengers. On the flip side, a lot of the franchises that have already been established are in danger.
With fans concerned about X-Men: Dark Phoenix after the poorly received X-Men: Apocalypse and no one knowing what’s going on with the Gambit project, franchises like New Mutants are in danger of being dropped. One franchise that’s been profitable for 20th Century Fox is Deadpool. People have wondered what was going to happen to the Merc With a Mouth, since Disney doesn’t produce a ton of R-rated films. The good news is that Deadpool 3 is already in works.
During his trip to China to promote Once Upon a Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds told the audience that his team was already working on Deadpool 3 and that this movie was going in a different direction. Reynolds also said to Variety, “often, they reboot or change a character maybe like four movies too late.” EW also reported some other cool news from Ryan Reynolds:
"“I do see him as being a part of X-Force, obviously. I would love to see him in a team-up sort of thing, like a mano-a-mano or a great female character from the X-Men universe. I just think if you’re going to do another Deadpool solo film, you’ve got to really, like, get that budget down to nothing and just swing for the fences, and break all kinds of weird barriers, and do stuff that no one else can do.”"

What does that does that mean for the future of the Regenerate Degenerate? It means Ryan Reynolds is still taking the character and the franchise seriously and that he is already looking forward to making another great Deadpool movie. We already know that Reynolds has been dying to work with Hugh Jackman and do a Wolverine and Deadpool team-up. Maybe he will eventually wear him down, and it’ll happen. Also, another movie with Cable and Domino would be even better than the second time around. Reynolds mentioned the idea of a strong female lead. They can use anyone from Psylocke (who was on X-Force in the comics) Negasonic Teenage Warhead (who works with Deadpool in the current comic book run), or even the little known, but powerful mutant Outlaw.
A new direction for Deadpool 3 means the product won’t grow stale. As Ryan Reynolds put it, sometimes movies wait too long to change and that’s how franchises fail. Having Deadpool go in a different direction can bring in a new audience while still keeping the core fans that are already invested. Everyone will be happy ass long as the change isn’t swords coming out of Deadpool’s arms and his mouth being taken away.
Ryan Reynolds has been hands on and enthusiastic with Deadpool from the beginning. The leaked test footage of him in CGI years ago during San Diego Comic-Con, his fighting for the movie to be rated R, and his continuing to be all in with the promotional team’s ideas show Reynolds loves what he’s doing with Deadpool. Unfortunately, no matter how much he may want this project to happen, there are reports that an X-Force movie may not happen.
What about X-Force?
The only cause for concern are the different reports that the X-Force movie has been canceled, along with Rob Liefeld tweeting, “Pour one out for ol’ X-Force. Victim of the merger. $800 million grosser easy.” It also doesn’t help that Deadpool said this during the end credits of Once Upon a Deadpool:
“Nope. We’re not. X-Force is just a marketing tool designed by Fox executives to keep Josh Brolin employed. It doesn’t exist.”
Hopefully, X-Force is still in the works. As Leifeld said, it’s easily an $800 million dollar movie.
