Matt Smith joins “Morbius” cast in mystery role.

Matt Smith has joined the cast of the upcoming Sony Spider-Man spinoff film, Morbius, which will star Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club, Suicide Squad, Blade Runner 2049).

The role that Smith, best known for his roles in The Crown, Terminator: Genisys and Pride and Predjudice and Zombies, will play in the film is currently unknown. He will also appear in Star Wars: Episode IX later this year.

This news was first reported by Variety, who stated that Smith will play a “major role in the film.”

Attached to write the script is the screenwriting team of Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who recently co-created the rebooted Lost in Space series for Netflix.

Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Lucas Foster will produce the film, with Sony supervision from Palak Patel.

Director Daniel Espinosa will helm the film; appropriately enough, his background is in horror films like Life and Safe House.

Leto will play the lead role of Dr. Michael Morbius.

The character of Morbius was created by the writing/illustrating duo of Roy Thomas and Gil Kane in The Amazing Spider-Man No. 101 in 1971. He was originally a scientist specializing in biology, Dr. Michael Morbius, seeking to cure a blood disease, who essentially became a vampire and became one of Spidey’s foes.

He appeared off and on in the comics over the next two decades, getting a 32-issue series of his own, Morbius the Living Vampire, from 1992 to 1995.

His powers include echolocation, night vision, flying and enhanced speed and strength. He also has an accelerated healing factor, though he also has the vampiric weaknesses of aversion to sunlight, garlic and crucifixes.

This Morbius project comes on the heels of Sony’s high-earning Venom film starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, which the studio hopes to kick off a shared cinematic universe of Spider-Man villains, without actually using Spider-Man.
