Spider-Man: Far From Home — Jake Gyllenhaal on why he chose Mysterio

Jake Gyllenhaal is Mysterio in this summer’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. However, after consideration for other comic book-esque roles, why did he choose this over others?

Jake Gyllenhaal will play Mysterio in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first film after Avengers: EndgameSpider-Man: Far From Home. A trailer is out, as well, which basically spoils the fate of at least one obvious character, and showcases this classic Spider-Man character, fishbowl and all.

It’s hardly the first role in a superhero movie Gyllenhaal was mentioned for, however, including the titular role in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Long before that, he was tied to Rick Flag in Suicide Squad.

Instead, the 38-year-old will take part in a Marvel film, but why Mysterio? He spoke to LAT Entertainment on why this was the proper role after all these years (transcription h/t to Comic Book Movie):

More from Movies

"“He’s a great character…you know it was one of those things that people have asked me for a number of years, ‘Are you going to do / do you want to do a movie like that, or if you were asked to would you?’ And my response has always been, particularly since being at Sundance [where] so many of the stories [are]…character-driven and that has always been my desire, to find something in that space that seems to match my skill and also what I love and my own honesty. And it just so happened that it does with that part. So, I’m glad that people feel excited about it.”"

For someone of Gyllenhaal’s caliber to be attracted to this film, it positively shapes what’s to arrive this summer. Plus, if he’s intrigued by Mysterio’s character-driven story, it should mean an interesting ride as someone side-by-side with Peter Parker.

Does relate to Mysterio’s comics arc? He starts as an adversary, only to become a full-fledged antagonist to Marvel’s favorite web-slinger. If the MCU follows this, Gyllenhaal’s character may start as a hero, only to steadily fall into evil as the film progresses, unless he’s a villain disguised as a protagonist.

Whatever may happen, Mysterio is an interesting character for Gyllenhaal to handle. Everyone will see what happens to him, Peter and the returning cast on July 5, when Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters.
