Matt Reeves sheds some light on what to expect from his Batman film and when fans can finally expect it to hit the big screen.

When it comes to Matt Reeves’ The Batman, various rumors have been making their way around the web for a while now. Throughout all of it, Reeves has been relatively silent, but he’s now opening up about his plans for the project.

Reeves recently did an interview with THR, during which he discussed a number of details pertaining to The Batman. One of those details is that the film will be more of a detective story with noir elements:

"“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films.”"

Reeves also confirmed that the film’s current title is indeed The Batman, but this could change, depending on how the project progresses:

"“I’m working with it as The Batman in my head and that’s what we’ve always referred to it as. But these things have taken a life of their own. As we go deeper into it, it may become clear, ‘Oh, actually this might be a great spin on the title.’ But as of now it’s The Batman.”"

In terms of the villains, a few have been rumored to be appearing, included the Penguin, a role that has been linked to comedic actor Josh Gad. Although Reeves admits he’s a fan of Gad, he revealed that “there will be a rogues gallery” in the film, and both Reeves and the studio already know how they’ll proceed with casting these roles:

"“We’re starting to put together our battle plan. The studio has a definite shape in mind for when they see us doing it and I think it’s aligning pretty well with what we’re thinking too.”"

Finally, Reeves confirmed that he is currently aiming for a spring or summer 2021 release date. Based on the current status of the project, this sounds like a feasible window for release.

It’s a relief to finally hear some concrete details about The Batman, following the numerous rumors and reports. However, it does seems that some of the rumors turned out to be true, like the detective story approach and the actual title.

Reeves seems to be taking a very different big screen approach to the Caped Crusader than some of his predecessors. He’s aiming for a less grandiose and more grounded style, which falls more in line with Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. The film may still be a few years away, but at least fans can take comfort in the fact that Reeves has a plan in place.
