FX has given a series order to a new drama Y, which will be based on the critically acclaimed comic series Y: The Last Man.

After years of being trapped in development, Y has now been given a series order by FX. Based on Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaugh and Pia Guerra, the series has been long-gestating in various formats, whether it be television or film. After years of being in development, FX finally gave a green light for a pilot to be shot and now will air a full series.

Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk, The Killing of a Sacred Deer) is cast as Yorick, the last man on Earth after an unknown virus has killed the entirety of the male population. Other members of the cast include Imogen Poots (28 Days Later) as Hero Brown, Yorick’s sister, Diane Lane (Man of Steel) as Senator Jennifer Brown, Yorick’s Mother, and Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel) as Agent 355, a clandestine agent tasked with keeping Yorick safe.

Production on the pilot began in August 2018 with the final pilot more than likely only being finished recently. Even if the show hadn’t been given a series order, simply shooting the pilot would be farther than an adaptation has gotten before. Originally being developed as a film for New Line Cinema in 2007, but no script was ever greenlit by New Line between the time they obtained the rights and 2014, when Vaughn and Guerra had the rights returned to them.

Then in 2015 it was announced that FX was developing a series based on Y: The Last Man. According to Deadline though, the show was on a slow development schedule due to showrunner Michael Green’s (Blade Runner 2049, American Gods) busy schedule. Regardless, of the hiccups on the way, Y will finally be coming to television screens.
